FedEx announced this week that it will delay the opening of its Asia-Pacific Hub in China. According to the article (in the body of the story), the company did not give any reason for this delay; however, it is perfect reason for us to secure our jobs with a union contract. FedEx got a lot of news coverage the other day when the company announced it plans to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from its FedEx Express aircraft fleet by 20 percent. FedEx also plans to improve the fuel efficiency of its vehicle fleet by 20 percent. They hope to accomplish all of this by 2020.

FedEx has made public the transcript of its annual shareholders meeting held Sept. 29, 2008 in Memphis. You’ve read on this blog what the FedEx Express workers who attended the meeting thought. FedEx garnered positive headlines for its slanted disclosure that the “IRS withdrew its tentative assessment for tax and penalties” at FedEx Ground for 2002. Shareholders, FedEx Ground drivers, state tax authorities and other interested parties were not given any more information than what FedEx wanted to leak out. The facts remain: the IRS continues its audit for 2002 and 2004 and 2005 and 2006; the federal courts are still hearing the national ERISA and state claim lawsuits; more than 30 states continue administrative and tax reviews of the employee status of FedEx Ground drivers; the Court of Appeals will consider the employee determination of the NLRB.
